Virtusa

Virtusa is a global IT services and digital engineering company that delivers consulting, engineering and automation work for large enterprises, with major delivery centres in Sri Lanka and India.

One of the tools it brings to clients is VTAF, the Virtusa Test Automation Framework. Virtusa describes it as a reusable, scalable framework that works across many technologies. In one of its published case studies, VTAF helped a Fortune 500 US health insurer automate testing across 138 applications and shorten its QA cycles.

I studied computer science at the University of Colombo School of Computing, where I had built course management systems on Moodle that let students view their own results and plan how to improve. Virtusa was where all of that theory turned into daily work.

Object oriented design, UML, Java and JavaScript all came into use, and I worked with a graph database, OrientDB, for the first time.

My main piece of work was adding mobile application testing capabilities to VTAF. That took me deep into Selenium and Appium, including the tooling needed to automate testing on iOS, and building the capability so it fitted the framework's reusable approach.

Building tools for testers taught me to think about the people who would use what I built. I kept finding myself more interested in the problems behind the code and the people who had them, and that is what pulled me towards business analysis.
